October 5th, 2022 - Tarot Suits - Swords

Hello and well met! Today I wanted to give a brief overview of the suit of swords in the Tarot. The suits correspond with different elements, and for Swords that is Air! Fitting, since we are currently in Libra season.

Swords are a suit about communication, logic, the mind, and “justice”. Justice in this case does not mean what we feel is owed, but rather a natural consequence. For example, being caught cheating on a test and having the test go in as a failing grade, or touching a hot stove and being burned. Justice for the Tarot does not mean vengeance, pettiness, or something we can manufacture. It is simply the truth as it comes out on its own. The suit of swords is also (of course) associated with the air signs - 1-3 are cardinal air of Aquarius, 4-6 are fixed air of Gemini, and 7-9 are the mutable air of Libra. The court cards can have a connection to someone in our life who is a Libra, and the sword cards as a whole could relate to zodiac placements in our lives. The Knight of Swords, for example, could be an earnest, eager man. The Queen of swords could be a decisive, sometimes harshly critical woman (or alternatively someone who knows just what to say!).

The fun part of Tarot is understanding the different interpretations of the cards, and figuring out how it applies to our lives. What is fascinating is getting into those nitty gritty little details, and finding the ways the cards have an interesting way of answering our questions.

Later this month we will move onto the next suit, Cups, and go over their elemental association of Water.
